Engineering components made of low carbon steel are often heat treated to improve their mechanical properties. The phenomena that occur during a heat treatment always involve atomic diffusion. Heat treating temperatures, times and cooling rates are often predictable using the mathematics of diffusion and appropriate diffusion constants. As a trainee engineer for manufacturing selection process, you are asked to design the surface hardening process that will increase the diffusing species concentration of the component to 0.35 wt% at a position of 4 mm below its surface using one of diffusing species from TABLE Q2. Also, you are needed to compare case hardening with phase transformation in enhancing the strength and hardness of the engineering component using isothermal transformation diagram of a eutectoid iron carbon alloy for the comparison of the process. Your design should include but not limited to the following information:i. Assumptions made in designing surface hardening process including definitions and theories.ii.
