As we learned Japan’s enormous and quick development after the Meiji Restoration
As we learned Japan's enormous and quick development after the Meiji Restoration, a curious similarities can be seen between Japan in the early 20th century and China now. <
<
1) Both developed rapidly both in economy and military that threatened the existing order.<
<
2) Both became isolated from the major part of the world as others were threatened from the rise of new power. <
<
Read the following two opinions and write down what you think. <
<
A) The above 1) and 2) are true. Traditional powers in the post World War II, the United States, the Western Europe, and Japan are not happy and struggeling how to deal with rising China. As such, they are trying to contain China as the US, Great Britain, etc. tried to do against Japan. It was similar when the West tried to preven the rise of Axis powers right before World War II particularly rising Japan was threatening for them. <
<
B) While 1) and 2) seem to be similar, the current situation is totally different. Although Japan was rising, it was not as big as China is now, which holds the second largest economy and military. Japan's Navy was powerful ranked 3rd before World War II, its economic position was not as big as China's. Besides, Japan was far more aggressive than China is today. South China Sea conflict is far less serious than actual invation of Japan in China. Also, China is trying to make good relations with Russia, Iran, and many developing countries in Africa. Therefore, their similarities are not as simialr as these 1) 2) seem to suggest.
